How to Use and Clean a Prostate Massager Safely

A prostate massager should never feel like a test of endurance. Good preparation, enough lubricant, gradual settings and careful cleaning matter more than chasing intensity. This step-by-step guide covers a calm first session and a repeatable care routine.

If you have not chosen a device yet, start with our beginner's prostate massager buying guide or compare the current BUZZ BLOCK collection.

Before you begin

Read the instructions for your exact model

Controls, charging ports, water-resistance ratings and cleaning limits differ. Do not assume that a toy described as water resistant can be submerged. Fully charge the device if required, then inspect it for cracks, damaged seams, sharp edges or a swollen battery. Do not use a damaged product.

Choose a comfortable, private setting

Allow enough time so there is no need to rush. Wash your hands, use the bathroom if that helps you feel comfortable and place lubricant and a clean towel within reach. Internal douching is not required for routine toy use and frequent or aggressive cleaning can cause irritation.

Use a suitable lubricant

The anus does not self-lubricate, so generous lubricant helps reduce friction. Water-based lubricant is a practical default because it is generally compatible with condoms and toy materials. Check the labels before combining products: oil-based lubricants can weaken latex condoms, and some silicone lubricants may affect some silicone toys.

How to use a prostate massager step by step

  1. Clean and dry the toy. Even a new product should be cleaned according to its instructions before first use.
  2. Start with the device switched off. This gives you more control during insertion.
  3. Apply lubricant generously. Cover the insertable surface and apply more as needed. Do not rely on a small initial amount for an extended session.
  4. Relax and insert slowly. Use the tapered tip and curved profile as designed. Never force the toy. The base or retrieval section must remain outside the body.
  5. Pause before adding intensity. Let your body adjust, then begin at the lowest setting.
  6. Change one variable at a time. Increase vibration, motion or expansion gradually so you can identify what feels comfortable.
  7. Remove slowly. Switch the toy off first. If the model expands, return it fully to the closed position before removal.

A device such as L-Curve Pro offers onboard controls as well as app adjustment, while PulseWave adds a flapping motion. Hellfire Flower adds expansion and therefore requires the extra step of closing it completely before removal.

When should you stop?

Stop immediately for pain, numbness, bleeding, burning, persistent irritation or any sensation that feels wrong. Do not use numbing creams to mask discomfort: pain is useful feedback. Seek medical care for significant bleeding, severe or persistent pain, fever, a retained object or symptoms that concern you.

Using a prostate massager with a partner

Agree on controls, limits and a clear way to pause before starting. The person wearing the toy should be able to stop the session at any time. App or remote control changes who presses the button; it does not replace communication or consent.

If a toy is shared, wash it between users and consider using a new condom on the toy for each person. Change the condom and clean the toy before moving it between different body openings. These measures help reduce the transfer of bodily fluids and bacteria.

How to clean a prostate massager

  1. Switch it off. Disconnect any charging cable.
  2. Check the care instructions. Confirm whether the product can be rinsed and whether any section must stay dry.
  3. Wash the contact surface. For the current BUZZ BLOCK prostate massagers, the product instructions call for warm water and mild soap. Pay attention to seams without using abrasive tools.
  4. Rinse away residue when permitted. Avoid prolonged immersion unless the manufacturer explicitly approves it.
  5. Dry completely. Use a clean lint-free cloth and allow seams to air-dry before storage or charging.
  6. Store separately. Keep the device in a clean, dry pouch or container away from heat, direct sunlight and contact with incompatible materials.

Common cleaning mistakes

  • Assuming “water resistant” means safe for soaking.
  • Charging the device before its port and seams are fully dry.
  • Using harsh bleach, abrasive cleaners or scented household products without explicit manufacturer approval.
  • Leaving lubricant or soap in seams.
  • Putting a still-damp toy into a closed storage bag.
  • Sharing without cleaning or changing the barrier between users.

Before every reuse

Check that the surface is intact, the controls respond normally and the battery has not changed shape or behavior. Replace a device that develops cracks, peeling, persistent odor, exposed components or charging problems. A damaged toy is not worth “one more use.”

A simple first-session checklist

  • Purpose-made anal toy with a secure base
  • Clean, charged and undamaged device
  • Compatible water-based lubricant
  • Lowest setting first
  • No force and no numbing products
  • Stop for pain, numbness, bleeding or irritation
  • Wash and dry fully after use

The right device should match your experience and preferred type of control. Compare the three designs in the BUZZ BLOCK prostate massager collection, or revisit How to Choose a Prostate Massager for a feature-by-feature decision guide.
